NZ paintings arrived

I picked up my New Zealand paintings today from American Airlines. They look different in the light here! I Painted them with diffused natural light coming in from skylights in my Wellington studio whereas I paint mostly by artificial light and ambient light in Minneapolis. Additionally the color and intensity of the sunlight is different in New Zealand in general and in Wellington most notably. Its much more intense there and whiter than our warm yellowish light in middle America.

I'll be showing them in May as part of a proper show.

Departing New Zealand is bittersweet. Today I cleaned out my studio; brought buckets of sand back to the beach; swept, and carried the canvases out to the car. I spoke little to my studio mates as I was rather melancholy.

Sailling

For the past four weeks I have been working quite hard at painting and have created a number of new works influenced largely by my daily walks and swims along the shore between Island Bay and Owhiro Bay.

Tomorrow I leave for Auckland and then sailing in the Bay of Islands for one week with the YBD's (young British doctors) and Diego the Chilean.

Day 49 in New Zealand

Southerly view from the first leg of my commute to the studio from the house. It is opposite Mt. Victoria in Wellington. Neighborhood of Hataitai. My rather dodgy shared abode is the barn-shaped structure on the left side of the image. The water is Lyall Bay and the South Pacific.

Taputeranga Island along the last leg of my route to the studio between the bus stop at Island Bay and Owhiro Bay.

Water-bird sculpture in the water outside Owhiro Bay, Wellington. One hundred paces from my studio.
